They celebrated a successful harvest with a feast that included wild turkey, fish, and other foods. The feast was attended by both the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians. Who had helped the Pilgrims survive the harsh winter.

The holiday did not become an official national holiday until 1863.  President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday of November as a day of Thanksgiving.
